Mitochondria are often called the powerhouses of the cells because they generate most of the cell's energy by breaking down nutrients and producing ATP, the main source of energy in our bodies.
They exist in nearly every cell in the human body and produce 90% of the energy our bodies need to function (Mitochondrial Diseases. Cleveland Clinic: my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/15612-mitochondrial-diseases). Their main functions include:
1. Energy Production - Mitochondria produce ATP, powering everything from muscle contractions to nerve impulses to maintaining our body temperature and more. The average cell in our bodies uses 10 billion ATP per day, with our brains using 70% of our ATP, so the mitochondria are hard at work helping our body function optimally! (Mitochondria - Fundamental to Life and Health; Integr Med. 2014 Apr;13(2):8-15; Pizzorno)
2. Cellular Metabolism and Repair - Mitochondria regulate our cellular metabolism, which effects our overall energy levels. When we have efficient metabolism, our cells are able to function optimally and can repair themselves more efficiently. Mitochondria play an important role in healing as well as regulating the inflammatory response.
3. Mitophagy/Quality Control - Mitophagy involves removing disfunctional or damaged mitochondria. When only healthy mitochondria are present in cells, our cells function more optimally and prevents further cellular damage.
You can see why our mitochondria are so integral to our overall health and wellbeing and were the inspiration for our name! Let's work together to figure out ways to optimize your mitochondrial health and get you feeling and functioning your best!
